Our mission

Bring the value back to the universities that create it

Universities carry out most of the world's fundamental research, and capture only a small fraction of the value it creates. Patly exists to flip that dynamic, completely.

The status quo

How universities lose the value they create

Four steps, and the value is gone. Every one of them happens quietly.

01

Universities create the IP

Most fundamental research happens inside universities, and much of the world's new IP begins there. The inventions come out as papers, theses, and code, published for anyone to read.

02

It is published before it is protected

Publication comes first, and protection rarely follows. In the US, the inventor has twelve months after publishing to file. Miss that window and the rights are gone for good.

03

Anyone can use it, for free

An invention published without a patent can be used by any company, anywhere in the world, without licensing it or buying it from the university that created it. That is exactly what happens to most university IP today.

04

Because nobody ever saw it

Disclosure depends on a researcher walking into the TTO, and most never do. Until now there has been no way to detect the valuable IP created across an entire university, let alone rank it and decide what deserves protection under a fixed budget.

The value is not lost in the lab or in the licensing office. It is lost at the moment of publication, before anyone with filing authority ever looked.

What Patly changes

See everything. Protect what matters. Spend the same.

Every invention, discovered

Patly automatically discovers the IP created across an entire university, from what it already publishes. Nothing depends on who walks in the door.

Every invention, valued and ranked

Each candidate gets an estimated value and a rank, in one place: a single view of everything the university has created, what each piece is worth, and the factors that matter for deciding what to protect.

Twice as much protected, same spend

At $5,500 against the $10,000 to $15,000 firms bill to draft and file, the same patent budget protects about twice as much. What gets filed is still your office's call. What changes is that cost stops making the decision.

If we succeed

The status quo, flipped

Scale this to the majority of US universities and the IP landscape changes fundamentally. The IP that was mostly missed before is protected by the universities that created it, and the value of that IP flows back to those universities, rather than to the companies that would otherwise have used it for free.

The benefit reaches past any one campus. IP that would have been lost entirely is protected, at a fraction of the cost, and research created in the US stops being free raw material for anyone in the world to build on. Companies and countries that used it for free now license it from the universities that created it.

The universities that create the IP become the ones who capture its value.

That is the whole mission, in one sentence.

We prepare a shortlist report for your university before our first meeting, at no cost.
